What is Biotechnology? Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that involves using living organisms, from microorganisms to plants and animals, to make or improve existing products. It is an interdisciplinary science that incorporates elements of biology, chemistry, medicine, engineering, physics and mathematics.

The Malaysian Government has recognized biotechnology as one of the key strategic drivers to propel the country’s social and economic development in pursuit of the status of a developed nation. It is estimated that by 2020, the biotech industry will contribute RM48 billion of Gross National Income (GNI), creating 170,000 new job opportunities and capturing investment of RM50 billion.  Malaysia’s rich biodiversity; strong governmental support and commitment in R&D provide a solid base for further developments in the biotech sector.

Realising the great demand and job openings in the near future for Biotechnology graduates, Quest International University Perak (QIUP)’s Biotechnology Degree Programme aim to produce quality graduates with the right skill sets. The QIUP B. Sc. (Hons) degree in Biotechnology with specialisations in agriculture, healthcare and industrial biotechnology will indeed produce skilled Biotech graduates the nation needs to develop a full-fledged innovation ecosystem that will further amplify our economic transformation drive.

The programme ensures that QIUP’s graduates benefit from a six-month industrial training stint and another half-year carrying out a hands on research project, thus equipping them with the right technical and soft skills needed in today’s workforce.

The curriculum provides comprehensive knowledge both in basic and applied sciences coupled with relevant hands-on-training during laboratory sessions. The extra value-added benefits include intensive training in language, presentation and communication skills as well as a solid grounding on safe and responsible usage of modern biotech equipment and sufficient exposure to business practices, ensuring our graduates  will be able to utilise  their knowledge via innovative applications encapsulated within appropriate bio-entrepreneurship ventures. Throughout the programme, students will gradually become aware of how to build up their emotional quotient to acquire a good understanding of human relations while taking on socio-economic responsibilities towards good citizenship.

Minimum entry requirements

Examinations Requirements
Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) Pass in STPM with a full pass in two subjects with a minimum CGPA of 2.00
General Certificate of Education
Advanced (“A”) levels
Pass in A-level with at least a grade C in two subjects
Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) Pass in Unified Certificate (UEC) with at least Grade B in 5 subjects
QIUP Foundation in Science Pass with a minimum CGPA of 2.00
SAM / AUSMAT / CPU Pass with minimum marks of 60%
Matriculation / Foundation Pass in Matriculation / Foundation Programme in a relevant field from any recognised HEP with a minimum CGPA of 2.00
Diploma in any Science-related areas Pass Diploma in a related field from a HEP recognised by the Malaysian Government with a minimum CGPA of 2.00
International Baccalaureate (IB) Minimum of 20 marks
Other Qualifications Other equivalent qualifications recognised by the Government of Malaysia
  •  The university reserves the right to make the final decision on acceptance into a university degree programme.

Intakes: 3 intakes in a year

Duration: Full-time – 4 years

Students’ ability is gauged both through continuous assessments and a final exam. The continuous assessment component comprises tests / quizzes, mid-term examination, laboratory works, field trips reports / presentation, and projects / assignments / case studies which accounts for an allocation of about 40% marks depending on the course. The balance of the marks is allocated for the final examination.
